アフリカの東部、エチオピア南部からタンザニアにかけて分布しています。季節的に乾燥した熱帯バイオームにある砂地の潅木帯や林などに生え、高さは３０～６０センチになります。葉は披針形から長楕円形で多肉質、長さは１８センチほどです。この淡緑色の葉には、小さな不規則な濃緑色の斑点があります。春から初夏にかけて、花茎を伸ばして穂状の総状花序をだし、小さな緑色から白色の釣鐘状の花を咲かせます。果実は長さ５ミリほどの蒴果です。

ユリ科ドリミオプシス属の常緑多年草で、学名は Drimiopsis botryoides (syn. Ledebouria botryoides)。英名は Giant squill。

The Giant squill (Drimiopsis botryoides) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is found in eastern Africa, from southern Ethiopia to Tanzania. It grows in sandy shrublands and forests in seasonally dry tropical biomes and is 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are lanceolate to oblong, fleshy, and about 18 cm long. These light green leaves have small irregular dark green spots. From spring to early summer, it produces spike-like racemes with small green to white bell-shaped flowers. The fruit is a capsule about 5 mm long.
