The Scaly male fern (Dryopteris affinis) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is a nearly evergreen fern that is native to western and southern Europe and southwestern Asia. This fern commonly grows on moist soils in woodlands. The leaves are dark green, 30-120 cm long, bipinnate, with the pinnae opposite on the rachis. The rachis at the base of the frond is densely covered in yellow-brown scales known as ramenta. The sorus is round, in one row between midrib and margin.
