The Dryopteris nigropaleacea belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Afghanistan to Pakistan, western Nepal and northern India. It grows in mountains at altitudes of 1500 to 2500 m. The leaves are bipinnate compound, 20 to 60 cm long and 10 to 25 cm wide, bluish-green in color and not shiny. There are 18 to 21 pairs of pinnae. The base of the leaf stalk is covered in dark brown to blackish brown scales. The sorus is small, with 4-6 pairs of pinnules, and the indusium is kidney-shaped and brown.
