ヨーロッパの南部および中部が原産ですが、いまではイギリスや北アメリカにも帰化しています。和名では、直訳して「紺屋カミツレ」と呼ばれますが、名前のとおり草木染めに使われます。高さは３０〜６０センチになり、５月から７月ごろ、鮮やかな黄色の花を咲かせます。

キク科カミツレモドキ属の二年草または多年草で、学名は Anthemis tinctoria。英名は Dyer's chamomile、Yellow chamomile。

The Dyer's chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a biennial or a perennial herb that is native to central and southern Europe. This herb is naturalized in Britain and North America nowdays. The Japanese name translates directly to "koya-chamitsure", and as the name suggests, it is used for herb dyeing. It can reach 30-60 cm in height and blooms bright yellow flower-heads from May to July.
