マダガスカルが原産です。年間雨量１２００〜２５００ミリの雨林に生え、高さは最大７〜１０メートルになります。単幹で環状の模様があり緑色、はじめには白色の粉物質に被われています。クラウンシャフトにはテディベアの綿毛に似た目立つ赤褐色の毛が生えています。

ヤシ科ヤマドリヤシ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Dypsis leptocheilos (syn. Neodypsis leptocheilos)。英名は Teddy bear palm、Red-stemmed triangular palm。

Teddy bear palm (Dypsis leptocheilos) belongs to the Arecaceae (the Palm family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to Madagascar. This palm grows in rainforests with rainfall ranging from 1200 to 2500 mm per annum, and can reach a maximum height 7-10 m. The trunk is single, ringed green which is at first covered in a white powder substance. It has a very distinctive reddish brown velvet-like hairs on the crownshaft that resembles a teddy bear's fuzz.
