マダガスカル島の固有種で、１属１種です。二次林に生え、高さは１０〜２０メートルなります。偽茎は直立し、その先端から長い柄のある長楕円形の葉を、２列に互生します。小さな黄白色の花は、一年中咲きます。名前は、旅人が葉の基部に溜まる水で咽を潤したことからとか、扇状に広がる葉の向きが方角を示すことからなどと言われています。

バショウ科タビビトノキ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Ravenala madagascariensis。英名は Traveler's palm、Traveler's tree。

The Traveler's palm (Ravenala madagascariensis) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen herb that is an endemic species of Madagascar Island, and the only species in the genus Ravenala. This herb gorws in the secondary forest and up to the height of 10-20 m. The pseudostem stands upright and bears two rows of oblong leaves with long petioles atop of pseudostem. Small yellow-white flowers bloom all the year round. The common name is derived because the traveler moistened the throat with the water accumulated in the base of the leaves, or because the direction of the leaves spreading fan-shaped indicates the direction.
