西アジアからヨーロッパが原産です。わが国へは、明治の中頃に渡来しました。今では各地に帰化しています。茎は根もとで分枝して、途中から直立し、高さは１０～３０センチになります。葉は広卵形で対生し、縁には鋸歯があります。４月から６月ごろ、上部の葉腋に小さな青紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠の先は４裂しています。果実は小さな蒴果です。

ゴマノハグサ科クワガタソウ属の二年草で、学名は Veronica arvensis。英名は Corn speedwell。

The Corn speedwell (Veronica arvensis) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a biennial herb that is native to Europe from West Asia. I came to Japan in the middle of the Meiji era (1868-1912). Now it is naturalized in various places. The stem branches at the root and stands upright from the middle, reaching a height of 10 to 30 cm. The leaves are broad-ovate and opposite, with serrated edges. From April to June, small bluish-purple flowers come on the upper axils. The tip of the corolla is split into four. The fruit is a small capsule.
