わが国の各地に分布する「ふとい（太藺）」の一品種です。水辺や湖沼に生え、高さは８０〜２００センチになります。茎は直径１〜２センチの円筒形で、黄白色の縦縞が入ります。葉はふつう葉鞘だけです。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂に花序をだし、分枝した枝先に黄褐色の小穂をつけます。

カヤツリグサ科ホタルイ属の多年草で、学名は Scirpus tabernaemontani f. pictus。英名はありません。

The "Tatejima-futoi" (Scirpus tabernaemontani f. pictus) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is a variety of "Softstem bulrush" that is distributed in various parts of Japan. It grows on watersides and lakes and can reach 80-200 cm in height. The stem is cylindrical with a diameter of 1 to 2 cm and has yellowish-white vertical stripes. The leaves are usually only petioles. From July to September, inflorescences are borne on the shoot apex and tan spikelets are attached to the branches.
