この種の起源はよく分かっていませんが、「ライム（Citrus aurantifolia）」と他の柑橘類との自然交雑種と考えられています。高さは４．５〜６メートルになり、ほとんど棘がありません。葉は広披針形で、葉柄には翼があります。周年、白い花を咲かせますが、１月が中心です。果実は楕円形から長楕円形で、食用や薬用に利用されます。名前は１９世紀後半にタヒチ島からカルフォルニアに導入されたことから。現在ではフロリダ州が主な産地となっています。

ミカン科ミカン属の常緑小高木で、学名は Citrus latifolia。英名は Tahiti lime、Persian lime。

The origin of this species is not well understood, but it is thought to be a natural cross between Lime (Citrus aurantifolia) and other citrus fruits. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that grows up 4.5-6 m in height. This tree has no spines. The leaves are broad lanceolate, and with winged petioles. The white flowers blooms around year, but their main flush is in January. The fruits are ovate to oblong and are used for food and medicine. The name was derived from the introduction in California from Tahiti in the late 19th century. Florida is now the main production area.
