アメリカの南部に分布しています。肥沃な湿り気の多いところを好み、成長が早くて、高さは１０〜２０メートルになります。わが国へは明治時代に渡来しました。葉は厚くて光沢があり、裏面には褐色の毛が生えています。初夏のころ、芳香のある「はくもくれん（白木蓮）」に似た、大きな白い花を咲かせます。１０月から１１月ごろ、長さ１５センチほどの集合果をつけます。 |

モクレン科モクレン属の常緑高木で、学名は Magnolia grandiflora。英名は Southern magnolia、Bull bay。 |

The Southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) belongs to Magnoliaceae (the Magnolia family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to the southern United States. This tree grows in the wet and fertile places, grows fast and can reach 10-20 m in height. It was introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (1868-1912). The leaves are thick and glossy with brown hairs on the reverse sides. Large white fragrant flowers come in early summer. The fruits are columnar aggregates about 15 cm long and ripen in October to November. |
