中国南部からインドシナ半島、それに台湾に分布しています。高さは１５メートルくらいになります。葉は光沢のある濃緑色の楕円形で、わずかに鋸歯があります。１０月から２月ごろ、真っ白な花を咲かせます。花は、ぽとりと落ちて雄しべを上に地面に並び、目玉焼きのカーペットのようになります。「はち」や「ちょう」の吸蜜源です。

ツバキ科タイワンツバキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Gordonia axillaris。英名は Gordonia、Fried egg tree。

The Gordonia (Gordonia axillaris) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to southern China, the Indo-China Peninsula and Taiwan. This tree can reach about 15 m in height. The leaves are glossy, dark-green elliptic with slightly toothed edges. The pure white flowers bloom from October to February. They drop off and land on the ground with the stamens facing upwards, resembling a carpet of "fried eggs". It is a source of honey for bees and butterflies.
