熱帯アフリカが原産の「ソルガム」の一種で、高さが３メートルほどになる在来の長桿種です。「こうりゃん（高梁）」と同様に、葉の中肋部が白くなります。８月から９月ごろ、茎頂に総状花序をだし、いっぱいの花を咲かせます。果実は９月から１０月ごろ、赤褐色に熟します。在来種の穂がばらばらなのは、紡錘形だと湿気を帯びてかびやすいからだそうです。粘り気のあるもち種で、製粉して団子や餅などに利用されます。山形県小国町の特産に「たかきびめん（高黍麺）」があります。

The "Taka-kibi" (Sorghum bicolor) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is a type of Grain sorghum native to tropical Africa. It is a conventional long rod type with a height of about 3 m. The middle rib of the leaf is whitish same as Kaoliang (Sorghum nervosum). A lot of flowers will bloom in racemes at the terminal stems from August to September. The fruits ripen reddish brown around September to October. The spikes of native species are sporadic because of if they are fusiform-shaped, they prone to be humid and moldy. It is a sticky rice, and is milled and used for dumplings and rice cakes.
