"Takao-sumire" (Viola yezoensis f. discolor) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed only around Mt. Takao in Tokyo, Honshu, Japan. It grows in the half-shade, such as under forests and along valleys, and can reach 10 to 15 cm in height. It is a form of "Hikage-sumire" and has the characteristic that the surface of the leaves turns from dark brown to black-purple. The white flowers come in April to May. The labellum and lateral petals have purple streaks.
