わが国の奄美諸島以南から台湾、中国南部、東南アジアに分布しています。根茎は太くて、葉柄の基部とともに羊毛のような黄褐色の軟毛に被われています。葉は長さ２メートルほどになります。根茎のかたちから別名で「ひつじしだ（羊羊歯）」、また漢方では金毛狗脊（きんもうくせき）と呼ばれます。

タカワラビ科タカワラビ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Cibotium barometz。英名は Scythian lamb、Chain fern。

The Scythian lamb (Cibotium barometz) belongs to the family Dicksoniaceae. It is an evergreen tropical tree fern that is distributed from the Amami Islands of Japan south to Taiwan, southern China and East Asia. Rhizomes are thick and covered with woolly yellowish-brown hairs as well as base of petioles. Fronds are about 2 m in length. Its roots are used for Chinese herbal medicine.
