The Plume poppy (Macleaya cordata) belongs to Papaveraceae (the Poppy family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan, eastern China and Taiwan. This herb grows in sunny waste lands and roadsides, and can reach 1-2 m in height. The orange bitter sap oozes when breaked stems. The sap contains alkaloids and toxic. The panicles are borne and bloom white non-petaled flowers from June to August. The Japanese name "Takeni-gusa" comes from its hollow stem, which resembles a "take" (bamboo). It is also called "Champa-giku" in reference to the Champa Kingdom, which once existed in the Central Coast region of Vietnam, because of its exotic appearance. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "博落迴", and in Chinese, "博落回" (bo luo hui).
