"Takono-ashi" (Penthorum chinense) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, and Southeast Asia. It grows in moist places such as rice fields, swamps, and riverbanks, and can reach a height of 30 to 80 cm. The stem is upright and does not branch. The leaves are lanceolate or narrow lanceolate and alternate. From August to September, inflorescences are borne on the tips of the stems and bloom yellow-green flowers without petals. The inflorescence is rolled at the beginning, but later it grows and slopes up. The Japanese name resembles the shape of an inflorescence as an octopus's leg.
