The "Takane-kuro-suge" (Scirpus maximowiczii) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu northward to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, northern Korea, northeastern China, and the Ussuri region. It grows in moist alpine meadows, reaching heights of 15 to 40 cm. The leaves are linear and short, mostly basal. From August to October, it produces a scape bearing 2 to 4 small black spikelets at its tip. The fruit is an obovate achene. It is also called "Miyama-wata-suge". It is classified as Vulnerable (VU) on the Ministry of the Environment Red List.
