大船フラワーセンターで、昭和４４年に「そめいよしの（染井吉野）」から実生選抜された品種です。花の形態や色は「そめいよしの」に似ていますが、花期が、葉の展開前の２月中旬から３月中旬と早いことが特徴です。名前は、フラワーセンターに近く、由緒ある地名の「たまなわ（玉縄）」から。

バラ科サクラ属の落葉高木で、学名は Prunus x yedoensis cv. Tamanawa。英名は Tamanawa cherry。

The Tamanawa cherry (Prunus x yedoensis cv. Tamanawa) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is a selected variety of "Tokyo cherry" (Prunus x yedoensis) by rasing from seed. It was cross breeded by Ofuna Flower Center in 1969. It resembles Tokyo cherry closely in its floral morphology and color. This cherry bloom from middle of February to middle of March before foliation.
