アフリカの熱帯地方が原産です。高さは２０〜２５メートルにもなります。葉は偶数羽状複葉で、小葉は７〜２０対あります。葉腋から黄色い花を咲かせます。花弁には赤紫色の縞があります。若葉と花にはやや酸味があり、食用にされます。果実は長さが１０〜１５センチの円筒形で、褐色の甘酸っぱい果肉は生食用や料理用に使われます。また葉や樹皮、果実は民間薬としても利用されるそうです。

マメ科タマリンド属の落葉高木で、学名は Tamarindus indica。英名は Tamarind、Indian date。

The Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is native to the tropical region of Africa. This tree can reach 20-25 m in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate with 7-20 pairs of leaflets. The yellow flowers bloom in the axils. The petals are magenta-streaked. The young leaves and flowers have subacid taste and are used for food. The fruits are cylindric, 10-15 cm long, and the sour-flavored fruit pulp is used a raw diet and a cooking. Also the leaves, barks and fruits are used in herbal medicine.
