ブラジルが原産です。わが国へは明治時代に渡来しています。高さは３０〜５０センチほどになります。葉は披針形から長楕円形で、光沢があり互生します。７月から９月ごろ、小さな白色の花を下向きに咲かせます。果実は球形で、秋から冬にかけて橙色から赤色に熟し、長く鑑賞できます。別名で「ふゆさんご（冬珊瑚）」、「りゅうのたま（竜の玉）」とも呼ばれます。

ナス科ナス属の常緑小低木で、学名は Solanum pseudo-capsicum。英名は Jerusalem cherry。

Jerusalem cherry (Solanum pseudo-capsicum) belongs to Solanaceae (the Eggplant family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to Brazil. It was introduced into Japan during the Meiji era (about 130 years ago). This shrub will be about 30-50 cm. The leaves are lanceolate to oblong, shiny and alternate. The small white flowers bloom downward from July to September. The fruits are spherical and ripen from orange to red from fall to winter and can be enjoyed for a long time. It is also called "Fuyu-sango (winter coral)" or "Ryuno-tama" (dragon ball).
