わが国の本州、伊豆半島から紀伊半島それに四国・九州の沿岸部をはじめ、世界の熱帯・亜熱帯地域に広く分布しています。海岸の岩場や樹木の幹などに生えます。葉は１回羽状複葉で叢生し、多くの羽片がつきます。匍匐枝をだして広がりますが、ところどころに貯水用の塊茎をつけ、これが名前の由来となっています。

タマシダ科タマシダ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Nephrolepis cordifolia。英名は Narrow swordfern、Fishbone fern。

The Narrow swordfern (Nephrolepis cordifolia) belongs to the family Oleandracea. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from the Izu Peninsula to Kii Peninsula of Honshu, longshore of Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, and widely in tropical and sub-tropical regions. This fern grows on seashore rock places or tree trunks. The leaves are once pinnatly compound with many pinnae. It spreads by the runners and studs tuberous roots for water reservoir.
