中国が原産です。わが国には明治時代に渡来しました。高さは２〜４メートルになり、葉は狭長楕円形から狭倒卵形で、互生または枝先に束生します。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋から散房花序をだし、白い花を咲かせます。果実は平たい球形で橙黄色に熟し、先端に萼片が残ります。

バラ科トキワサンザシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pyracantha angustifolia。英名は Narrowleaf firethorn。

The narrowleaf firethorn (Pyracantha angustifolia) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to China. It was introduced into Japan in Meiji Era (about 120 years ago). It can reach 2-4 m in height. The leaves are narrow oblong to narrow obovate and alternate or clumping at the terminal branches. The corymbs are borne on the axils and bloom white flowers from May to June. The fruits are compressed round and ripen in yellowish-orange, and remain sepals at tips.
