The "Tamura-so" (Serratula coronata ssp. insularis) belong to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in montane grasslands and it can reach 50-150 cm in height. It is similar to the "No-azami", though it has deep pinnately to dissected leaves and without thorns. The leaves are covered with fine hairs on the both surfaces. The magenta flower-heads bloom upright atop of stems from August to October. The origin of the Japanese name is not known.
