"Taniwatari-no-ki" (Adina pilulifera) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed southward from Miyazaki-prefecture of Kyushu to the Ryukyu Islands in Japan, Taiwan, China and Southeast Asia. This tree grows in bogs of montane dales, and can reach 2-5 m in height. The leaves are oblanceolate or narrow-oblong, leathery and arranged in opposite. The spherical capitulum are borne on the terminal branches, and the pale yellowish-brown, numerous flowers bloom in the clusters from August to September. The exserted styles are conspicuous.
