中国の東北部に分布しています。草地や水辺、道端などに生え、高さは60センチほどになります。葉は羽状複葉で、小葉は卵形です。5月から8月ごろ、青紫色の花を咲かせます。根は赤みを帯び、漢方では鎮痛薬として用いられます。
シソ科アキギリ属の多年草で、学名は Salvia miltiorrhiza。英名は Chinese red sage。
The Chinese red sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to northeastern China. This herb grows in grasslands, water edges or roadsides and can reach about 60 cm in height. The leaves are pinnate compound with ovate leaflets. The violet-blue flowers come from May to August. The reddish roots are used for herbal analgesic medicine.
