"Takane-nogariyasu" (Calamagrostis sachalinensis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a pernnial herb that is distributed from the Chubu region of Honshu northward to Hokkaido, the Ishizuchi Mountains of Shikoku in Japan, and the Far East region of Russia. It grows in subalpine to alpine meadows and forest margins, and is 30-60 cm tall. The stems are thin and sometimes grow in clusters. The leaves are flat, hairless, and 3-6 mm wide. It produces 3-10 cm long spikes from August to September. The spikelets are light green and slightly purplish. It is also known as "Onoe-gariyasu" in Japan.
