わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道南西部に分布しています。山地の湿った岩壁や斜面に生え、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。葉は広い線形で、縁がざらつきます。６月から７月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして茎頂部に雄花序をつけ、下部に長い柄のある雌花序を下垂させます。名前は、雌花序を狸の尻尾に見立てたもの。

カヤツリグサ科スゲ属の多年草で、学名は Carex podogyna。英名はありません。

"Tanuki-ran" (Carex podogyna) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Chubu district of Honshu north to south-eastern Hokkaido in Japan. This herb grows in montane wet cliffs and slopes, and can reach 30-100 cm in height. The leaves are broad linear with scabrous edges. The male cluster is borne atop of stem and the drooping female clusters with long petioles are borne at the under parts of flowerin stalk from June to July. The Japanese name is derived from the female clusters which resemble to the tail of Japanese raccoon.
