わが国の本州、中部地方以西の太平洋側から四国、九州それに中国に分布しています。神社やお寺の周辺の森によく生えています。雌雄異株で、５月ごろ、葉腋に黄緑色の花をいっぱい咲かせます。雌株には秋、球形の果実が赤く熟します。葉は厚い皮質で、２０センチほどになり、傷つけると黒変します。名前は、インドの「ばいたらじゅ（貝多羅樹・Borassus flabelliformis）」のように、葉に経文を書いたことら。

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑高木で、学名は Ilex latifolia。英名は Luster-leaf holly。

The Luster-leaf holly (Ilex latifolia) belongs to the Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed westward from Chubu-district of Honshu (the Pacific Ocean Side) to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan and China. This tree can be often found in forests around temples and shrines. It is dioecious. The yellowish flowers bloom abuntantly on the axils in May. The round fruits ripen red in fall. The leaves are thick leathery, about 20 cm long, and turn black when injured. The Japanese name is derived that the leaves were used as a paper which written sutras, as with Palmyra palm (Borassus flabelliformis).
