The Garden purslane (Portulaca oleracea var. sativa) belongs to Portulacaceae (the Purslane family). It is an annual herb that is a cultivated variety of "Green purslane", widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions of the world. The stem is erect and grows to a height of about 50 cm. The side branches also grow obliquely upward and try to stand up. The leaves attached to the top of the stem are broad and plump. In Europe, it is called "Summer purslane" or "Pourpier" and has a certain status as a vegetable. The leaves and stems have a slimy texture and are used raw in salads, stir-fried, soups, soaked and boiled dishes.
