南アメリカが原産です。わが国へは１９５８年に福岡県で帰化が確認されています。今では本州の関東地方以西から沖縄まで広がっています。道ばたなどに生え、高さは７０〜１５０センチになります。葉は無毛で、基部の葉鞘には開出毛があります。７月から１０月ごろ、茎の上部に１０〜２０個の花序の枝をだします。小穂は卵形で先が尖り、花期には黒紫色の柱頭と淡黄色の葯が目立ちます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科スズメノヒエ属の多年草で、学名は Paspalum urvillei。英名は Vasey's grass。

The Vasey's grass (Paspalum urvillei) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is native of South America. Naturalization was confirmed in Fukuoka prefecture in 1958 to Japan. It is now spreading from the Kanto region of Honshu west to Okinawa in Japan. This herb grows on roadsides and up to a height of 70-150 cm. The leaves are hairless, and the leaf sheath at the base has erect hairs. The 10-20 cluster-branches are borne atop of stems from July to October. The spikelets are ovate, pointed, with black purple stigmas and pale yellow anthers conspicuous in the flower season. It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
