わが国の本州、中部地方以北の日本海側から北海道に分布しています。山地の湿地などに生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。葉は長楕円形で縁には鋸歯があり、羽状に深裂から中裂します。８月から１０月ごろ、散房花序をだし、赤紫色の頭花を２〜５個、上向きに咲かせます。総苞は椀形、総苞外片は太針状で斜上します。山形県小国町南部では、「やちあざみ」や「いいであざみ」と方言で呼ばれます。

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium inundatum。英名はありません。

"Tachi-azami" (Cirsium inundatum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from the Japan Sea side of Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan. This herb grows in montane marshes and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are oblong with serrated edges, and divided pinnately into clefts or partites. The 2-5 magenta flower-heads bloom upward at the terminal corymb from August to October. The bracts are bowl-shaped, and the involucal bracts are large needle-shaped and spread side-upward. In the southern part of Oguni Town, Yamagata Prefecture, it is called "yachi-azami" or "iide-azami" in dialect.
