The Pond cypress (Taxodium ascendens) belongs to Taxodiaceae (the Bald cypress family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed along the southeastern coast of the United States, from Delaware to Louisiana. It grows in swamps and lakesides, and is about 30 m high. The canopy is narrow conical, the bark is reddish brown and thick with vertical cracks. The leaves are needle-shaped, about 1 cm long, and fall with twigs in the fall. It is dioecious and male inflorescences hang down in the spring, with female cones at its base. The fruits are ovate cones, about 3 cm long.
