The American dune grass (Leymus mollis) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed to various parts of Japan, as well as in the Korean Peninsula, China, Russia, North America, and Greenland. It grows on the sandy shores and can reach 50-120 cm in height. It has rhizomes and stolons and grows in clusters. The leaves are 20-50 cm long, 10-18 mm wide, broad linear, greenish-white, hard and slightly thick. From June to July, the upright spike is borne and spikelets consisting of 3 to 5 florets are attached. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the Ainu people dried the leaves and used them to knit a container "tenki" (grass basket) for threads and needles. Another name is "hama-ninniku" in Japan.
