メキシコからグアテマラに分布しています。高さは３〜４．５メートルになり、基部で分蘖します。葉は剣形で、長さは３０〜１２０センチになります。茎頂に細い穂状花序をだし、固い殻に包まれた小さな種子をつけます。数千年以前から、メソアメリカ地域（現在のメキシコ北部からホンジュラス、エルサルバドルあたり）で採集利用されていたものが、遺伝子の突然変異によって、柔らかな種皮に包まれた「とうもろこし（玉蜀黍）」の祖先になったと考えられています。和名では「ぶたもろこし（豚蜀黍）」と呼ばれます。Ｃ４植物（Ｃ４型光合成を行う植物）です。

イネ科テオシント属の一年草で、学名は Euchlaena mexicana。英名は Mexican teosinte、Teosinte。

The Mexican teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an annual herb that is distributed from Mexico to Guatemala. It will be 3 to 4.5 m high and will be tillered at the base. The leaves are sword-shaped and can reach 30-120 cm in length. It produces thin spikes on the shoot apex and bears small seeds wrapped in a hard shell. It is believed that what had been collected and used in the Mesoamerican region (currently from northern Mexico to Honduras and El Salvador) for thousands of years ago became the ancestor of "corn" wrapped in a soft seed coat due to a genetic mutation. In Japanese name, it is also called "Buta-morokoshi". It is a C4 plant (Plants with C4-type photosynthesis).
