中国の中部が原産です。わが国へは江戸時代の初めに渡来しました。蔓性で、高さは１．８〜２．４メートルになります。葉は３出複葉または２回３出複葉で対生します。５月から６月ごろ、葉腋から花柄を伸ばし、直径５〜８センチくらいの白色の花を咲かせます。花弁のように見えるのは６個ある萼片で、花柄には一対の苞がつきます。中国名は「鉄線蓮（Tiexianlian）」。

キンポウゲ科センニンソウ属の落葉低木で、学名は Clematis florida。英名は Asian virginsbower。

The Asian virginsbower (Clematis florida) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to central China. This tree was introduced into Japan in early Edo Era (about 350 years ago). It is a woody vine and can reach 1.8-2.4 m in height. The leaves are 3-lobed compound or biternate-pinnate and opposite. The white flowers 5-8 cm across come on the axillary peduncles from May to June. The 6 sepals look like petals and the peduncles have a pair of bracts. Top and 2nd to 3rd picture is a garden cultivar 'Vienetta'. 4th to 5th and bottom picture is "Clematis florida var. flore-pleno".
