アメリカの中南部、テキサス州からオクラホマ州に分布しています。乾燥した石灰岩地に生え、高さは12メートルほどになります。樹皮は灰色または赤褐色で、深い割れ目が入ります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、楕円形の小葉が1〜3対つきます。葉の縁には波状の鋸歯があります。雌雄異株で、早春の葉が展開する前に円錐花序をだし、花冠のない紫色がかった花を咲かせます。果実は翼果で、晩春に熟します。 
モクセイ科トネリコ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fraxinus texensis。英名は Texas ash、Mountain ash。 
The Texas ash (Fraxinus texensis) belongs to the Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from Texas to Oklahoma in the south-central United States. It grows on dry limestone and is about 12 m high. The bark is gray or reddish brown with deep cracks. The leaves are odd pinnate compound with 1 to 3 pairs of elliptic leaflets. The edges of the leaves have wavy serrations. It is dioecious and produces panicles before the leaves of early spring develop and blooms purplish flowers without corolla. The fruits are samara and ripen in late spring.
