The Thyrsopteris elegans belongs to the family Thyrsopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is endemic to the Juan Fernandez Islands in Chile, South America. It is the only extant species in the family Thyrsopteridaceae, a family of tree ferns that showed diversity and wide distribution during the Mesozoic era. It grows in forests up to an altitude of 1000 m and reaches a height of about 4.5 m. The trunk is thick and short, with large, pale green, glossy fronds at the top of the stem. The sterile fronds are quadruple or quintuple pinnate. The fertile fronds have a unique shape, consisting of numerous tiny spheres (sporangia) and having virtually no leaf blade.
