わが国の本州、岩手県以南から四国・九州に分布しています。山地や沢沿いに生え、高さは６〜１０メートルになります。一般的なカエデ属のように葉が掌状にならず、「さわしば（沢芝）」に似たふつうの形の葉が対生します。雌雄異株で、４月から５月ごろ、下垂した長い花序に淡い緑色の花を咲かせます。名前は、この花序のかたちを群れ飛ぶ千鳥に見立てたもの。別名で「やましばかえで（山柴楓）」とも呼ばれます。 |

The Hornbeam maple (Acer carpinifolium) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Iwate prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in mountains and along mountain streams, and can reach 6-10 m in height. The leaves are not palmately, "Sawa-shiba"-like broad ovate and arranged in opposite. It is dioecious. The pale green flowers bloom at the drooping long clusters from April to May. |
