The Hornbeam maple (Acer carpinifolium) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Iwate prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This tree grows in mountains and along mountain streams, and can reach 6-10 m in height. The leaves are not palmately, "Sawa-shiba"-like broad ovate and arranged in opposite. It is dioecious. The pale green flowers bloom at the drooping long clusters from April to May.
