メキシコが原産です。高さは４５センチほどになり、葉は細長い剣状です。７月から８月ごろ、オレンジ色や紫色、黄色などの花を咲かせます。外花披片は大きく、内花披片は小さいもので、基部には虎斑が入ります。花は短命で、ほとんどが一日花です。この根は食べることができ、アステカ族の人々の食用となっていました。

アヤメ科チグリジア属の多年草で、学名は Tigridia pavonia。英名は Tiger flower、Shell flower。

The Tiger flower (Tigridia pavonia) belongs to Iridaceae (the Iris family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Mexico. This herb can reach about 45 cm in height and the leaves are narrow sword-shape. The orange, purple or yellow flowers come in July through August. The outer tepals are large and the inner tepals are small with tigroid mottles at the base. The flower is short lived, each often blooming for one day. This roots are edible and was eaten by Aztecs.
