"Chishima-kumomagusa" (Saxifraga merkii var. merkii) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Daisetsu Mountain Chain, the Yubari Mountains, and the Shiretoko Mountains of Hokkaido, and also North East Asia. This herb grows on alpine screes and can reach 3-6 cm in height. The leaves are obovate to oblong, fleshy and covered with glandular hairs. The cymes are borne at the terminal flowering stalks, and 1-5 white flowers bloom from July to August. The flower has five petals and ten stamens.
