メキシコから中央アメリカが原産です。高さは１．５〜１．８メートルになります。葉は濃緑色で３浅裂し、柔らかな綿毛に被われています。７月から９月ごろ、鮮やかな赤橙色の頭花を咲かせます。いくつかの園芸品種があり、「イエロートーチ」や「レッドトーチ」が代表です。和名では「メキシコひまわり（メキシコ向日葵）」と呼ばれます。

The Mexican sunflower (Tithonia rotundiflora) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual herb that is native to Mexico and Central America. This herb can reach 1.5-1.8 m in height. The leaves are dark green, three lobed and covered with soft downy hairs. The brilliant red-orange flower-heads bloom from July to September. There are some cultivars of Mexican sunflower, 'Yellow Torch' and 'Red Torch' are most notable.
