熱帯アメリカが原産です。わが国へは昭和時代のはじめに渡来し、現在では各地に帰化しています。道ばたや荒れ地に生え、高さは10〜30センチになります。ほとんど分枝せず、葉はへら形で互生します。葉の両面は白くて長い綿毛に被われます。春から秋にかけて、上部の葉腋から短い花序を出し、淡い褐色の頭花を咲かせます。舌状花はなく筒状花だけです。 
キク科ハハコグサ属の一年草または二年草で、学名は Gnaphalium pensylvanicum。英名は Wandering cudweed。 
The Wandering cudweed (Gnaphalium pensylvanicum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is an annual or a biennial herb that is native to tropical America. It was introduced into Japan in the early Showa Era (about 80 years ago) and nowadays it is naturalized over land. This herb grows in roadsides or disturbed grounds and can reach 10-30 cm in height. The stem is few branched. The leaves are spatulate, alternate and covered with white long woolly hairs. The short clusters are borne on the upper axils and bloom pale brown flower-heads from spring to fall. The flower-heads consist of tubular flowers.
