わが国の本州、東北地方北部から北海道それに千島列島やカムチャッカ半島に自生しています。一属一種です。高山帯の礫地や岩場に生え、高さは５センチほどになります。幹は地表を這い、分枝してマット状に広がります。葉は小さな線形で、長さ３〜４ミリです。７月から８月ごろ、淡紅色の花を５〜８個、直立した花序の枝先に咲かせます。花冠は４全裂し、８個の雄しべが花冠から突き出ます。

ツツジ科チシマツガザクラ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Bryanthus gmelinii。英名はありません。

"Chishima-tsugazakura" (Bryanthus gmelinii) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native from northern part of Tohoku district of Honshu north to Hokkaido, as well as the Kuril Islands and the Kamchatka Peninsula. It is the sole species in the genus. This shrub grows on gravel and rocky areas in the alpine zone and up to a height of about 5 cm. The trunk crawls on the grounds, branches and spreads like a mat. The leaves are small, linear and 3-4 mm long. The 5-8 pink flowers bloom on the tips of upright inflorescences from July to August. The corolla is completely split into 4 and the 8 stamens protrude from the corolla.
