千島列島の南部からサハリンに分布しています。海岸地帯の岩場に生え、高さは１０〜３０センチになります。全体が灰白色の綿毛に被われています。葉は長楕円形で互生します。５月から６月ごろ、茎頂に小さな黄色い頭花を咲かせます。白い星形の花のように見えるのは苞葉です。

キク科ウスユキソウ属の多年草で、学名は Leontopodium kurilense。英名はありません。

"Chishima-usuyuki-so" (Leontopodium kurilense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the southern part of the Kuril Islands to Sakhalin. It grows on rocky coastal areas and can reach 10 to 30 cm in height. The whole is covered with grayish white fluff. The leaves are oblong and alternate. From May to June, small yellow flower heads bloom on the shoot apex. Bracts look like white star-shaped flowers.
