The "Tobera" (Pittosporum tobira) belongs to the family Pittosporaceae. It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Iwate Prefecture of Honshu south to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan. This tree grows on sea cliffs, forms horde. The origin of its Japanese name comes from its foul odor, which led to it being placed between doors during Setsubun as a charm to ward off evil spirits. The white flowers come on the terminal cymes from April to June. The flower color turns to yellow with age. The fruits are ripen yellow in October, splitting open from the top along three seams, with numerous red seeds. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "海桐".
