The King fern (Todea barbara) belongs to Osmundaceae (the Osmund fern family). It is an evergreen fern that is distributed in southeastern Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. It grows in tropical rainforests and along streams, reaching heights of about 3 m. The trunk is thick, growing to about 1 m in height. The fronds are pinnately compound, either once or twice pinnate, leathery, and 1.2 to 3.5 m long. The pinnules are oblong, with sharply pointed tips and serrated edges.
