わが国の本州、中部地方から東北地方の日本海側に分布しています。山地の林内に生え、高さは３０〜５０センチになります。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は円心形です。５月から６月ごろ、葉の展開と同時に、淡い紫紅色の花を咲かせます。花弁は小さな白色で、淡い紫紅色の花弁のような萼片が目立ちます。

メギ科トガクシショウマ属の多年草で、学名は Ranzania japonica。英名はありません。

"Togakushi-shoma" (Ranzania japonica) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chobu district to the Japan Sea side of Honshu in Japan. This herb grows in montane woods and can reach 30-50 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate with round-heart shaped. The pale peach bloom flowers bloom as soon as foliatoin from May to June. The petals are small white and the pale peach bloom, petaloid tepals are conspicuous.
