西インド諸島から南アメリカ北部が原産です。現在では熱帯・亜熱帯地域の各地で栽培されています。下部からよく分枝して潅木状になり、高さは７．５〜９メートルほどです。葉は長楕円形から披針形、狭倒卵形で互生し、悪臭があります。花は幹や枝などに単生し、外花披片は黄緑色、内花披片は淡黄色です。果実は卵形から心形で、４．５〜６．８キログラムになります。果皮には棘状の突起があり、果肉は白くてミックスジュースのような香りがあり、生食されるほかアイスクリームやシャーベットの原料にされます。

バンレイシ科バンレイシ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Annona muricata。英名は Soursop、Dutch durian、Guanabana。

The Soursop (Annona muricata) belongs to Annonaceae (the Custard apple family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to the West Islands and northern South America. It is cultivated widely in tropical and sub-tropical areas nowadays. This tree is much branched at the bases, shrubby and can reach 7.5-9 m in height. The leaves are oblong to lanceolate, narrow-obovate and alternate. They have an offensive odor. The single flowers are borne on the trunks or branches, the outer tepals are yellowish-green and the inner tepals are pale yellow. The fruits are ovate to heart-shaped and weighing between 4.5-6.8 kg. They have spiny projections on the rinds. The flesh is white and mixed-juice flavored. The fruits are used for row diet and the raw material for icecream or sherbet.
