The "Toge-ibota" (Ligustrum tamakii) belongs to Oleaceae (the Olive family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan's Nansei Islands. Specifically, it is found on Tonaki Island in the Okinawa Islands, Irabu Island in the Miyako Islands, and Yonaguni Island in the Yaeyama Islands. It grows on wind-eroded limestone cliffs near the coast and reaches a height of 15 to 25 cm. The branches are highly branched, and the tips of the twigs are often needle-like. Young branches extend horizontally and produce roots from the nodes. The leaves are ovate-elliptical, dark green, and glossy on the surface. From April to around October, it produces spike-like inflorescences at the branch tips, bearing white, bell-shaped flowers. The tips of the corolla are four-lobed. It is classified as Critically Endangered (CR) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
