The Barrenwort (Epimedium sempervirens) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed on the Sea of Japan side from Hokuriku region to Sanin region in Honshu, Japan. It grows in the mountains of heavy snowfall and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are 2 times triternate compound, and the leaflets are distorted ovate. The leaves are evergreen, but turn brown as they get older. From April to May, anchor-like flowers with four long spurs, bloom downward.
